When the employment relationship really ends.
Four weeks are 28 days, not a single month. And for the scale, length of service counts on the very day the notice is received. The calculator knows both, works out the date to the exact day and says which period applies and why.
Receipt by the recipient, not the date sent.
- Handed over in person: on the day of handover, even if the recipient does not open the letter.
- Dropped into the letterbox: on the day the box can be expected to be emptied. If dropped in after the usual postal time, the next day on which it can be expected to be emptied applies.
- Registered letter with receipt: only on handing over. A notice card is not enough. The safest way is a messenger who knows the content and can witness the delivery. With registered letters delivered by drop-off, the posting receipt and tracking status do not prove receipt (BAG, 30 Jan 2025, 2 AZR 68/24).
The calculator says by when notice must be received.
As soon as the entries are complete, the result appears here.
The calculator works under § 622 BGB and §§ 187 and 188 BGB. Employment contracts and collective agreements may differ. It is not a substitute for legal advice. Legal status: 14 Oct 2026, checked against the German Civil Code, last amended by Art. 6 of the act of 23 Jul 2026 (BGBl. 2026 I No. 226), and the Dismissal Protection Act, last amended by Art. 2 of the act of 14 Jun 2021 (BGBl. I p. 1762).
The rules are set by law. The calculator only applies them.
All periods are calculated to the exact calendar day. Every rule is stored as a test case and runs automatically with every change.
Claim, form and report
Summary dismissal
A summary dismissal for good cause has no period based on length of service. It must reach the other party within two weeks after the person entitled to give notice learned the relevant facts (§ 626 para. 2 BGB), and as a rule ends the employment at once. This calculator does not cover it.
Apprenticeship
This calculator does not apply to apprentices. During probation notice can be given without a period, afterwards only for good cause, or by the apprentice with four weeks (§ 22 BBiG).
Common questions
Write to us at this address. We answer it ourselves, usually within one working day.
Four weeks to the 15th or to the end of a calendar month (§ 622 para. 1 BGB). If the notice is received during probation within the first six months, two weeks with no fixed date apply (§ 622 para. 3 BGB).
If the employer gives notice, the period grows with the length of service: from one month after two years up to seven months after 20 years, in each case to the month end (§ 622 para. 2 BGB). What counts is the length of service on the day the notice is received.
The day of receipt does not count. Monthly periods end on the day with the same number, or if there is none, on the last day of the month. If the end falls on a weekend or public holiday, it does not shift (§ 193 BGB does not apply).
“Add to calendar” downloads a calendar file holding all the calculated dates. “Share link” copies the address with your entries, “Print” puts the result on paper.

What Zentrana does with it automatically
- 01 Enter the leaving date and Zentrana opens a case with everything that has to be handed back to the company: keys, vehicles and fuel cards.
- 02 As long as any part of it is still outstanding, the exit cannot be completed.
- 03 Once the leaving day is over and everything is back, the system blocks the login and removes the roles.
In Zentrana, nothing needs recalculating.
What you type in here one by one runs there automatically for every person: hours, deadlines, leave and holidays. Zentrana reports deadlines before they run out.
